/Problem

The first material from the client was a folder of the firm's own forms covering every stage of a stone worktop job, from the preliminary stonework quote with its 8 and 23 per cent VAT rates through the contract to the completion certificate and the receipt. They were filled in across three places, since measuring happens at the customer's home, cutting in the workshop and fitting on site. The documents for each stage were produced in separate tools, so the AMICO workshop had no single view of the state of its jobs. The client commissioned an application reproducing that workflow in full, along with a desktop version for the office and a split of permissions between office and fitting staff. The last stage set an extra condition. Fitting takes place in properties with no network access and must still end with a signed completion certificate and a deposit taken.

/Approach

Those forms were rebuilt box for box, so nobody had to learn a new layout in the middle of the season. The second decision was the order of saving. Everything is written on the tablet first and travels to the cloud when it can. That is why the app behaves the same in the office and in a property with no signal. Fitters work in a view of their own, with the day's plan and the completion paperwork, while the price list and the finances stay with the office.

/Solution

Everything is created on the device and stays there, including after it is switched off, and reaches the cloud once a connection returns. When two people change something at the same time, nothing is lost, because the two sets of changes are merged line by line, a deletion made on one device does not come back when the other one syncs, and invoice numbering stays continuous through the year and does not run backwards once the data from both tablets is brought together. Company data sits behind an account, the screen lock is set separately on every device, and the password, the PIN and the fingerprint never leave the hardware. In the office the same app runs as a Windows program and installs without asking for an administrator password.

/Result

On site the fitter opens the day's plan, fills in the completion certificate on the tablet, collects a signature on screen and issues the receipt, with no signal in the property. Back in range, the tablet sends the changes itself and the office sees the new state of the job without phoning the fitter. The certificate, the payment and the invoice come from the same place as the quote that started the job. The app reached the company only once there was not a single fault left in it that could stop a fitting.
