/Problem
Personal protection away from any premises has no sensors and no control panel to fall back on. The alert has to leave the phone itself, arrive even from outside network coverage and carry identity, address and a position that keeps updating while the person moves. Location data also falls under the protection required for sensitive categories. Securand, a licensed agency with a 24-hour alarm centre and response patrols in Lodz and Warsaw, commissioned the system to cover that ground. The order took in an app for the protected person, a view for the patrol crew and a duty officer's console in the control room.
/Approach
We fixed the order of the requirements before the first line of code and kept it to the end. Reliability came first, protection of the data second, then scale and ease of use. An alarm has to get out of an underground car park with no signal, so the phone holds it and keeps retrying until it is delivered, never sending the same alert twice. The location and photograph of a protected person are more dangerous in the wrong hands than having no app at all, so from the start we handled them as sensitive data rather than as ordinary account content.
/Solution
One app serves both the protected person and the patrol crew. A three-second hold sends the alert, letting go halfway cancels it, and a tap on the back of the phone raises the same alarm when looking at a screen is not an option. The app then asks what is happening and where, offers a silent mode answered with yes or no, and carries chat and voice messages to the duty officer. An alarm already running can be called off only with a PIN, so nobody else can switch it off. In the control room a siren sounds and the incident card opens with the photo, phone number, address, a map and the trail travelled. The duty officer takes the alert in one move, sees the estimated driving time and sends the nearest free patrol to the scene, then calls the police and closes the case with a note. Every step lands in a log that becomes the client's report.
/Result
The app is published on the App Store and Google Play, and the duty officer's console runs in Securand's control room at an address of its own. Data is held in Frankfurt, position history cannot be reached from outside, photos open only through a short-lived link, and incidents are deleted within six months. The whole path, from the button press to the refusal an unauthorised person meets, was checked on the running system before launch, and every change to the code goes through an automated security check.
