/Problem

The menu changes every week, and orders for a given day come in only until three in the afternoon. Five days, two soups and two mains each, paired however the customer likes. Casa Blanka in Glowno commissioned a site showing the current menu with its prices and leading to the phone line on which orders arrive. The second requirement was that the company put up the following week's menu on its own, with no risk to the layout. An identity had already been approved in print and had to be carried over onto the screen. Design and printing of a double-sided flyer formed a separate item of the commission.

/Approach

We split the content into what changes every week and what stays put. Swapping twenty dishes now touches nothing else, not the layout, not the colours, nothing that could quietly break on the way. The second decision was about scale. Prices and dish names are large enough to read at arm's length, because the site is opened mainly on a phone and with one hand. The core colours and the logo come from the flyer the owner had already approved, so print and screen stay consistent.

/Solution

Everything on offer sits on a single page. The bar of weekdays stays pinned to the top and highlights the day currently in view, so Monday is one tap away. Soups and mains stay independent, because customers pair them their own way. The menu and its prices are written in a form search engines understand, so the dishes can show up in Google results themselves. The logo was traced from the owner's own file and the vegetable drawings lifted from the flyer. The print magenta left white text below the legibility threshold set out in the accessibility standards, so on screen it is one shade darker. Nobody sees the difference and everybody can read it in daylight. Next week's menu goes in through a panel only the company can reach. At the company's request we also designed the double-sided flyer and saw it through print.

/Result

Price, cut-off time and phone number sit within thumb reach, and on a phone a Call button stays visible the whole way down the page, because orders are taken by telephone. There are no consent choices to make, because the site collects nothing about its visitors. Typing in the next week's menu takes a few minutes, and the new version appears on the site as soon as it is saved. The flyer and the site use the same logo and the same family of colours. Two more colours were added on screen, because the flyer holds three and there are five weekdays, each with one of its own.
